Why Insert Fit Matters

A plug tray insert only works if it fits the host flat. Cheap inserts float, shift, and leave gaps. Those gaps leak soil and water. They also slow down every watering pass. The 50F is a precision-built insert for standard 1020 flats. This 50 cell plug tray measures 50 x 25 cm (19.7 x 9.8 inches). It drops inside a 1020 watertight or mesh flat with a snug, accurate fit. It does not float during watering, and it leaves no soil-exposing gaps. We thermoform each tray from a single sheet of premium polystyrene, so wall thickness stays uniform across every cell. Each tray holds 50 square cells in a 5 x 10 arrangement. The top opening measures 3.6 cm (1.42 inches) and tapers to a 2.9 cm (1.14 inch) base. Cell depth is 4.0 cm (1.57 inches). Square cells hold roughly 20% more medium than round cells of similar width. The generous volume gives tomato and pepper seedlings room to build a substantial root ball. Every cell also includes one drainage hole, so excess water drains instead of pooling.

Best of all, the wide spacing improves airflow between cells. That airflow helps prevent damping-off and other humidity problems. Because the insert sits flat inside the host tray, you get even watering across all 50 cells.

A True Drop-In 1020 Insert

This tray is an insert, not a standalone carrier. Its 50 x 25 cm footprint nests inside a standard 1020 flat, which measures about 54 x 28 cm (21.3 x 11.0 inches). You use it inside watertight trays for bottom watering. You can also place it in mesh flats for drainage and bench airflow. So it works with ebb-and-flow systems and overhead irrigation alike. Material, Safety, and Reuse

We make every 50F from food-grade expanded polystyrene (PS #6). The trays are BPA-free with no intentionally added lead, cadmium, or heavy metals. Many municipal and commercial facilities recycle PS #6, so we recommend partnering with a local recycling program. These inserts work best for single use or 1-3 careful cycles.
