50-Cell Round PS Plug Tray | Deep Cells, Easy Plug Removal

The 50-cell round PS plug tray features cylindrical cells that make plug removal effortless — push from the bottom and the root ball slides out cleanly. A 4.5 cm (1.77 in) cell depth accommodates deep-rooted crops like tomatoes and cucumbers, while the round geometry prevents root spiraling. Precision-thermoformed polystyrene ensures consistent dimensions and reliable automated seeding.

Description

Why Round Cells Win for Fast Plug Removal

At transplant time, the plug has to come out cleanly. Square corners trap roots and slow down every pull. Round cells solve that problem. The cylindrical wall gives roots no corner to anchor in. A quick push from the bottom releases the whole root ball in one piece. You see less tearing, less medium loss, and faster transplanting by hand or machine.

The 50R is our round-cell workhorse for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, melons, and vegetative cuttings. This 50 cell plug tray combines easy plug release with a generous 4.5 cm (1.77 inch) depth. That extra depth supports crops that spend 4 to 6 weeks in the nursery.

50 Deep Round Cells, 5 x 10 Layout

Each tray holds 50 round cells in a 5 x 10 arrangement. The top opening measures 4.5 cm (1.77 inches), and the cell depth is also 4.5 cm (1.77 inches). At the base, each cell narrows to 3.8 cm (1.5 inches). That wide opening gives seeds and cuttings ample surface area. The tapered wall then guides the plug out with almost no resistance.

Every cell also has a single center drainage hole, so cuttings never sit in standing water. We thermoform the 50R from a single sheet of premium polystyrene. Walls stay uniform and rims stay clean, so each cell holds its shape through watering and handling. The open grid also allows good light and airflow across the whole tray.

Fits Your 1020 System on Day One

The 50R measures 54 x 28 cm (21.3 x 11.0 inches), the standard 1020 footprint. It nests inside 1020 watertight trays for bottom watering or ebb-and-flow benches. It also sits flat on mesh benches and stacks neatly with other 1020 trays. You do not need to change benches, irrigation, or handling equipment.

Built for Automated Seeders

Drum seeders, needle seeders, and vacuum lines all demand tight tolerances. We form the 50R with consistent cell pitch, opening size, and tray flatness. Every round rim is clean and smooth, so needles and nozzles never snag. The rigid profile also resists flexing at high speed. That means fewer mis-picks, fewer jams, and more trays seeded per hour. Round rims also suit vacuum pickup, because the nozzle seals on a clean circular edge.

Light to Ship, Easy on Margins

Each round 50 cell plug tray weighs just 155 grams. That low weight cuts freight cost directly. A pallet holds 3,200 trays, and a 40-foot high-cube container loads 70,400 units. For high-volume propagation, PS trays offer the lowest landed cost per cell.

Best Crops for the 50R

  • Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and melons
  • Vegetative cuttings and clones
  • Crops spending 4-6 weeks in the nursery
  • Growers who want the fastest possible plug removal
  • Hand and machine transplanting operations

Material, Safety, and Reuse

We make every 50R from food-grade expanded polystyrene (PS #6). The trays are BPA-free with no intentionally added lead, cadmium, or heavy metals. Many municipal and commercial facilities recycle PS #6, so we recommend partnering with a local recycling program. These trays work best for single use or 1-3 careful cycles. If you need trays for repeated washing and multi-season use, take a look at our PP range instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PS and PP plug trays?

PS (polystyrene) trays are lightweight and precision thermoformed for the lowest landed cost — ideal for single use or 1–3 careful cycles. PP (polypropylene) trays are heavier, washable, and built for repeated multi-season use. Choose PS for cost and seeder compatibility; choose PP when you need trays that survive repeated washing across many seasons.

How many times can I reuse a PS tray?

PS trays work best for single use or 1–3 crop cycles with careful handling, gentle washing, and proper storage. Because PS is rigid, repeated flexing or aggressive washing can cause hairline cracks. For repeated washing and multi-season use, see our PP range.

Does this fit standard 1020 flats?

Yes. The 50R measures 54 × 28 cm (21.3 × 11.0 in), the standard 1020 footprint. It nests in 1020 watertight trays for bottom watering and works with standard 1020 benches and handling equipment.

Are these compatible with automated seeders?

Yes. The 50R is thermoformed to tight tolerances on cell pitch, opening size, and tray flatness, so it runs on common drum, needle, and vacuum seeders. Send us your seeder model and we will confirm fitment.

What crops work best in a 50-cell round tray?

The 50-cell round tray suits tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, melons, and vegetative cuttings (clones). Round cells release plugs cleanly, and the 4.5 cm (1.77 in) depth supports crops spending 4–6 weeks in the tray.
